Before Trey Songz catapulted to fame with his hit record “Say Aahh” in 2009, he, along with the 804Boyz, released a classic Virginia mixtape called UpSouth. Never heard of it? C’mon yo, let me get you right then. This tape is a classic and I ain’t never heard Virginia repped so tuff. Every other bar is “We from Virginia,” or “We from Petersburg, Virginia,” or “We from the 804,” or “We some Ginia boys.” If you from Virginia you got to rock with it. Young G.O, Mumeet Daddy, and Fynch Money Bagz, the rappers who made up the 804Boyz combine well with Trey Songz to kill classic 2000s era beats using a complement of gritty street tales and smooth melodies. Drawing inspiration from Southern rappers like Scarface and Young Jeezy and opening with the Warner Brothers theme music, the mixtape feels like a movie. Hosted by DJ Smallz, The 804Boyz managed a nice little buzz with this tape,. Unfortunatley, personal and legal issues prevented the group from continuing. Nonetheless, this mixtape is definitely a hidden gem.
